Oakland Motor Car was founded in 1907 in Pontiac, Michigan, by Edward Murphy, the owner of the Pontiac Buggy Company, and Alanson Brush, an early Cadillac designer. Acquired by General Motors in 1909, Oakland Motor Car introduced its first Pontiac model in the 1926. The popularity of the Pontiac model in the 1930s ultimately lead GM to drop the Oakland name and thus the Pontiac division was born. Following World War II, the Chieftain and Star Chief models gained popularity and market share.
Marketed as the sporty and affordable division of GM, Pontiac ultimately reached third place in annual industry sales in the United States in the 1960s. Under the guidance of John DeLorean, its chief engineer and subsequent division head, Pontiac introduced, among other notable models, the iconic GTO and Firebird.
