This hideously modified 1960 Chevrolet Corvette, chassis 3535, one of 3 raced at Le Mans in 1960, sold over the weekend at RM Sotheby's Amelia Island auction for $785,500 (including the 10% buyer's premium). RM Sotheby's has a great write up about the car's history, before and after Le Mans.

Even though the Big Three had agreed to a ban on racing at the time, the father of the Corvette himself, Zora Arkus-Duntov, was instrumental in getting these cars to Le Mans. "Unofficially," Chevrolet employees assisted with engineering and testing during the cars' development. Although plans ultimately changed, Ol' Zora was even slated to drive a leg of the race in this particular car!

After Le Mans, chassis 3535 was sold off and passed through a few owners that, among other things, reworked the body, dropped in a Pontiac power plant, and painted it purple. Geez.
